Optional · Fushimi Inari at dawn
Ten thousand vermillion torii up the mountain. Empty before 8 AM, packed after 10. If only some of us go (Jake + Jess), grandparents and Rosetta can sleep in.
Sat morning in Kyoto. Pick one anchor activity (Aquarium, Railway Museum, or Fushimi Inari at dawn), Nishiki Market lunch, last shopping, and a special last dinner. Pack tonight.
Ten thousand vermillion torii up the mountain. Empty before 8 AM, packed after 10. If only some of us go (Jake + Jess), grandparents and Rosetta can sleep in.
Both are next to each other near Kyoto Station. Aquarium has a giant salamander tank (Rosetta loves), Railway Museum has 53 actual trains plus a working roundhouse (also Rosetta loves). Pick one.
Five blocks of pickles, fish, knives, tea, grilled small things on sticks. Eat as you go. Grandparents may want a real lunch nearby instead — Honke Owariya for soba is perfect.
Ippodo (tea), Kyukyodo (incense + paper), or Kaikado (tea canisters) for grown-up souvenirs. Daimaru depachika for snacks to bring home.
If the budget allows: a kaiseki dinner like Kikunoi (Michelin) or Gion Karyo (more accessible). Book months ahead. If we want easier: tonkatsu Katsukura, kushikatsu, or a high-end kaiten sushi.
